GREGORY GUIDED Beverly through the large double leaded-glass doors of the Crystal Creek Country Club. They passed across the marble-floored entry area and waited for the hostess to show them to their table.

Pausing in the doorway, Beverly looked across the room. Dozens of tables, dressed in their crisp white tablecloths, fresh floral centerpieces, sparkling silver and pointed mauve napkins added to the elegant atmosphere. Ever since she was a young girl, she’d loved going to the country club. Her mother and father had always made it a treat taking her out for her birthday, Easter or to celebrate something special. They’d all dressed up in their fanciest clothes and ordered whatever they’d wanted from the menu. She remembered her father’s deep, rich laugh and the way he’d looked at her mother. They had been so in love. When Beverly’s father died, Carolyn had grieved as if her broken heart would never mend.

Beverly wanted a love like that. She wanted a man who would adore her as her father had adored her mother. She wanted a man for whom she would feel such deep emotions that she would know she would die without him.

“Are you ready, Bev?”

Gregory’s hand on her elbow and his voice in her ear startled her. She’d been so deep in her own thoughts that she’d forgotten he was there. They walked into the dining room and Gregory held out her chair as she sat. He seated himself and smiled across the glowing candles at her.

“I’m glad you agreed to go out with me tonight,” he said. “Seeing you at the hospital all week and barely having a chance to talk to you has made me really look forward to this evening.”

Beverly looked at him, forcing herself to concentrate on the very handsome doctor. “It’s been a busy week there. What with half the staff being down with the flu and Grandpa Hank’s accident.”

“I didn’t realize that old man was your grandfather.”

“Well, no, he isn’t really. Actually, he’s my cousin Lynn’s great-grandfather. He’s been living at the Double C Ranch ever since I can remember and I spent a lot of time over there when I was younger. So it was just natural that I started calling him Grandpa Hank.”

“He’s a crusty old codger, but sharp as a tack. Now that young guy who was with him—”

“Gee…I sure am hungry,” Beverly interrupted and picked up the menu. “What’s the chef’s special tonight, Danny?” she asked the waiter.

“The beef Stroganoff is good and we have boneless barbecued ribs,” Danny answered. “By the way, it’s good to see you here again, Miss Townsend. It’s been a while.”

“Thanks, Danny. It’s good to get back here. It’s my favorite place to eat in Crystal Creek, you know.”

“It must be nice growing up in a small town and knowing everyone,” Gregory commented after they had given Danny their order and he’d headed toward the kitchen.

“It has its advantages and disadvantages.”

They kept up a lively conversation as they waited and throughout dinner. Beverly relaxed and realized she was having a good time.
